Spanning the Void – Belah Viaduct

A B.R. Standard class 4 defies gravity with its Penrith to Barnard Castle train crossing Belah Viaduct. This was one of several iron girder viaducts on the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway – originally planned to carry iron ore from the Furness region to the North East iron works – which was designed by the engineer Thomas Bouch. This highly-regarded engineer was born near Carlisle and worked on many projects, eventually being knighted by Queen Victoria in June 1879 after completing The Tay Bridge. In December that year, the bridge collapsed during a storm and 79 people were killed on the train that was crossing. He died a broken man the following year.
